Chocolate, cognac or champagne – the delicious names given to the different colour nuances within the brown diamond category indicate a tide of changing perceptions towards the stone. Previously relegated to the bottom of the pile beneath its white and fancy-coloured counterparts, brown diamonds have finally shaken their less-than-glamorous connection to industrial applications and are enjoying attention in the jewellery world.
One of the most high profile brown diamonds in recent times is probably the Golden Jubilee Diamond, a 545.67-carat gem that a group of Thai businessmen purchased from De Beers in 1995. It was presented to the Thai king in 1997 in celebration of his golden jubilee marking the 50th anniversary of his coronation. Today, it takes pride of place on the Thai royal scepter.
